A Jackpot Moment at the Samuels Hotel: A Family Memory

A story

The hotel was famous for its luxurious lobby area, especially the “bird cage” elevator. The lobby was also used as a seating area for clients at the Beauty Salon just off the lobby. One time my mother, Frances Flohr, was waiting for her hair appointment. She decided to put a dime into a nearby slot machine. That one dime produced a jackpot for her. Naturally she was thrilled. She reported that winnings to both my father, Edward Flohr, a Vice President of the First National Bank of Wallace, and to his father, Milton Flohr, the bank’s President. My Grandfather was outraged that the wife of a bank officer would have been seen in a public area gambling. even just a dime in a slot machine in the Samuels Hotel.
